Sinus Lift Q & A

What is a sinus lift?

A sinus lift is a surgical procedure that transfers and fuses bone to your upper jaw, near your molars. To achieve this, your surgeon “lifts” the sinus membrane to make room for the bone. The procedure is sometimes called a maxillary sinus floor augmentation or a sinus graft.

Why is a sinus lift needed?

The reason most patients need a sinus lift is that they don’t have enough bone in their upper back jaw to support a dental implant. Bone loss may occur because of periodontal disease or tooth loss.

Since maxillary sinuses sit close to your teeth, lifting them and adding more bone to this area allows your surgeon to place an implant that is more likely to fuse successfully to the jaw.

How does a sinus lift procedure work?

First, Dr. Farzaneh and his team take 3D X-rays of your mouth to understand the landscape of your teeth and jaw.

Dr. Farzaneh and his team can use different techniques to raise the sinus membranes. Typically, he makes an incision in the gums to expose bone and then cuts a small hole in the bone. Your sinuses lie on the other side of this hole.

Dr. Farzaneh gently pushes the sinus membrane up and away, and then he fills the space with bone-graft material. This material may come from an animal or your own body. Once the bone is placed, he closes the gum tissue with stitches.

What happens after a sinus lift procedure?

Most people have mild to moderate swelling after a sinus lift procedure. You can usually manage any discomfort with over-the-counter medication.

After about a week, you’ll return to the office for a checkup. Dr. Farzaneh and his team monitor your progress to make sure the procedure delivered the intended results.

Since the new bone material needs time to fuse with your jaw, you’ll wait anywhere from four to nine months before you have a dental implant procedure.

What are the benefits of a sinus lift procedure?

Dental implants can last a long time when they are done correctly. Therefore, a sinus lift ensures you’ll have the best chances of success when it’s time for your implant procedure.

Implants can transform the look and function of your smile if you’ve lost teeth, giving you natural-looking, beautiful results.
