When is bone grafting necessary?
Bone grafting may be necessary for various scenarios, including:
- Inadequate bone structure: to support a dental implant or jaw defects due to injury or trauma
- Sinus lift procedure: raises the sinus membranes to install a dental implant
- Nerve repositioning procedure: moving the alveolar nerve — located around the lower lip and chin — to make room for a dental implant
- Ridge expansion: restoring lost bone to increase the height or width needed for a dental implant
Where does bone grafting material come from?
If you have a significant jaw defect, Dr. Farzaneh may want to repair it using material from your bone. In cases like this, he extracts bone from your skull, hip, or lateral knee. Bone graft material can also come from a tissue bank, or Dr. Farzaneh may use synthetic bone graft material.
What can I expect during a bone grafting procedure?
The bone grafting procedure will be different for each patient, depending on your dental health and the problem that needs to be fixed.
Before your procedure, you meet with Dr. Farzaneh and his team to take 3-D X-rays of your mouth and jaw, which give him a comprehensive view so he can devise your treatment plan.
Dr. Farzaneh performs surgical procedures in the out-of-office surgical suite while you are under IV sedation or general anesthesia.
What happens after a bone grafting procedure?
After your procedure, it takes time for the bone graft material to fuse permanently with your natural bone. This process may take several months.
In the meantime, Dr. Farzaneh and his team monitor your progress to ensure that the graft was successful. When the bone graft has permanently fused, you can move forward with other dental work.
